Old Town Books Junior to Open This Fall

The Alexandria bookstore is adding a lot of inventory geared toward children.

By Colleen Kelleher July 29, 2024 at 8:41 am

Old Town Books will expand this fall with Old Town Books Junior. The children’s bookstore at 128 S. Royal St. is next door to the existing Alexandria bookstore and is expected to open in September.

“We’re going to have SO MANY BOOKS!,” the store posted on Instagram. “Young teen, middle grade, early reader, graphic novels, manga, picture books, board books – we will have it ALL!”

An exact date for the opening has not been announced.

In spring, Old Town Books owner Ally Kirkpatrick wrote about the expansion: “It’s an understatement to call it a ‘new section,’ though, when in reality we’re building out an entire kids’ bookstore. The new space will expand our shop into the other half of our beautiful historic 1840s brick building. Old Town Books will now occupy both 128 South Royal and 130 South Royal.”

Kirkpatrick, who has three children, said there has been a demand for children’s books. She said the inventory for young teens, middle graders, and early readers will triple.

“We’re also growing our selection of kids’ nonfiction titles, activity books, picture books, and baby books,” Kirkpatrick said on the store’s site.
