6 Easy Hiking Trails for Kids to Explore in Northern Virginia

Little ones can enjoy the great outdoors at these local spots.

Looking to get the kids outdoors? Perfect for little legs, these 2-mile (or less) trails are packed with fun, featuring wooden boardwalks, rock scrambles, native wildlife, and water views. Here are some of the best hikes for kids and families in Northern Virginia.

Bay View Trail

At Mason Neck State Park, the Bay View Trail is a family favorite, as it winds through lush wetlands, wooded forest, and sandy shores along Belmont Bay. The 1-mile loop hike provides plenty of shade and offers a self-guided tour booklet at the trailhead, showing freshwater marshes and pawpaw trees. Enjoy picturesque views across the lily pad–strewn marsh before reaching a small beach. 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton

Bears Den Overlook

Get ready for an adventure with the Bears Den Overlook hike on the Appalachian Trail. This 1.9-mile round-trip trek rewards adventurers-in-training with rocky terrain and breathtaking views across the Shenandoah Valley. The west-facing viewpoint makes this the perfect spot to watch the sunset. Route 7 at Blue Ridge Mountain Rd., Bluemont

Ellanor C. Lawrence Park

This scenic park gives kids the chance to see animals behind glass and in the wild. Before you start walking, check out the Visitor Center to pick up a map and see a small collection of fish, snakes, and turtles found in the park. There are roughly 4 miles of trails with various segments that can be explored. For a shorter walk, head straight to the pond and loop back for a 1-mile trek. 5301 Walney Rd., Chantilly

Lake Royal

Tucked away in Fairfax’s Kings Park West suburb is this 36-acre oasis with a peaceful walking path around the lake. Start this 1.9-mile loop hike from the parking lot at Lakeside Park. There you can find benches, picnic tables, a playground, and a basketball court for post-hike fun and relaxation. In fall, soak in the vibrant foliage reflecting across the lake. 5216 Pommeroy Dr., Fairfax

Neabsco Creek Boardwalk

Embark on a family hike along the Neabsco Creek Boardwalk. This 1.7-mile hike winds through scenic wetlands, leading to a two-story observation deck. Keep your eyes peeled for blue herons, wood ducks, mallards, sparrows, and more. Post-hike, treat the kids to slides and climbing structures at Rippon Landing Park. 15125 Blackburn Rd., Woodbridge

Theodore Roosevelt Island

Hidden in plain sight, families can explore this 89-acre park on a scenic 1.9-mile loop trail. Start by crossing a footbridge over the Potomac River, then stroll around the island. An oval-shaped plaza features a 17-foot-tall bronze statue of President Theodore Roosevelt and four 21-foot-tall granite tablets with his most famous quotes. Print out the Junior Ranger activity booklet and mail it in to earn a Junior Ranger badge. Access via George Washington Memorial Parkway, Washington, DC
