New Union Market District retailer features curated goods by Black-owned brands and makers

Gift Shop, the latest concept from Creative Theory Agency, opened Feb. 17 in the heart of the Union Market District.

Washington, DC recently welcomed its first retailer solely focused on featuring curated goods from Black-owned brands and makers.

Gift Shop, a 1,700-square-foot concept located at 1258 4th St. NE in Washington, DC, opened Feb. 17, specializing in lifestyle and home goods from artisan makers. The space also serves as headquarters for Creative Theory Agency, the marketing firm co-founded by Gary Williams, Jr. and Tamon George that was named one of Ad Age’s 2020 “Small Agencies of the Year” for its creation of impactful, inclusive cultural narratives for brands including Facebook, Netflix, Under Armour, Bevel, YouTube and Google.

“So many Black-owned businesses have shuttered during the pandemic,” Williams said in a statement. “At the same time, consumers have become more conscious of equity and who profits from Black creativity.”

Shoppers will be able to pick up items priced from $15 to $40, including globally-inspired wearable ceramic art, home decor, paper goods and apparel from Black Pepper Paperie Co., digital prints and puzzles from ArtByJlaw, everyday products and accessories for women of color from Fairfax-based Destiny’s Cache, bar essentials and cocktail mixes from Charismatic Creations and even Gift Box originals by the Creative Theory Agency team. Gift Shop is the first brick-and-mortar presence for some concepts, allowing owners to introduce their items to a new audience.

“Gift Shop is not just about picking up a shirt or art print,” said George in a statement. “It’s about supporting Black businesses, economic empowerment and amplifying Black creative voices who are carrying the culture forward.”

Tied to the opening, Creative Theory Agency has partnered with Google to support Black business and community and create upcoming programming. Gift Shop is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
