5 ways to celebrate Women’s History Month in NoVA

Exclusive tours, new exhibits and a special toast will honor over 200 years of women’s history in the United States.

Women’s History Month, honored from March 1 to 31, is being propelled by DMV-based institutions and picking up speed across the United States.

According to the website, The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, are all participating in this year’s celebration with commemorative exhibits, tours and more.

Find a handful of those honorary events below, and you’ll learn just how much women have had on United States’ history in over 200 years.

Women Fighting For A Better Community
Learn about local female heroes that had an exceptional impact on the history of Arlington. Guests will hear the stories of Elizabeth Campbell and Dorothy Hamm, who both fought for school desegregation in their communities. // March 11; 11 a.m.-noon; Aurora Hills Recreation Center: 735 18th St., Arlington; free

Women’s History Tours of Ben Lomond
Stop by the Ben Lomond Historic Site for an exclusive women’s history tour. See how the women of the plantation played a role in the everyday running of the property. // March 14; 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Ben Lomond Historic Site: 10321 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas; $5

Storied Women of the Civil War Era
Travel into the District to catch the stunning pictures of women from the Civil War era. From former first lady Mary Todd Lincoln to circus performer Mercy Lavinia Warren Stratton, see the incredible stories of these women, who rose to prominence and captivated the nation during wartime. // through March 20, 2022; National Portrait Gallery: Eighth and F Streets NW, Washington, DC; free

The Women of Lee-Fendall House
See how women shaped the over 200-year history of the Lee-Fendall House with a special behind-the-scenes tour. Starting in 1791 with Mary Lee Fendall, take a trip back in time as you learn about the Lee family and the women who helped save this historical house. // March 28; 2 p.m.; Lee-Fendall House Museum: 614 Oronoco St., Alexandria; $10

Specialty Tour – A Toast to the Ladies!
Celebrate the women of Gadsby’s Tavern with a special toast. Guests will learn about the role women played in tavern life, from owners to overnight guests, as they share one of Martha Washington’s favorite drinks. // March 29; 10-11:30 a.m.; Gadsby’s Tavern Museum: 134 N. Royal St., Alexandria; $20
