The Dulles South Multipurpose Center in South Riding is nothing new: The facility opened in July 2008, boasting 24,000 square feet of rooms for classes, meetings and activities; an indoor recreation area; and a senior activity center. But coming soon—the county says to expect a winter opening—is Phase III of the project that is the Dulles South Senior Center.
Years ago, funding was allotted in the county’s budget for the current center’s expansion design and construction. Construction is underway for both Phase II, which will add 81,000 square feet of recreation and fitness areas including an elevated running track, competition and leisure pool and climbing wall. Phase III will bring the 15,500-square-foot addition of a senior center.
Steve Torpy, the director of the county’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services, said in an email that the senior center is being modeled off of the three existing senior centers in the county—Carver Center, Cascades and Senior Center of Leesburg—and design features include a group exercise room, fitness room, classrooms, lounge, computer lab, club room, game room, conference room, multipurpose room and kitchen. Programs will include the weekday congregate meal program, health and fitness classes, wellness classes, arts and craft classes, a kiln for making ceramics, table tennis, pool, pickleball and numerous educational programs that will include fall prevention, health promotion, Medicare information and more.
The center will also be used as a distribution point for the Home Delivered meals program, and a case manager will be present at preset times to work with those who need social services.
An opening date for both phases has yet to be finalized.
