Here’s a brief look at what the Reston Community Players, Torpedo Factory, Signature Theatre and others have planned for the month of March:

Arts

Starting on the first of the month, Gallery Underground will host the Prince-inspired Purple Reign show (through March 31), featuring pieces spanning mediums but all sharing one key theme: the color purple. The Greater Reston Arts Center will celebrate Youth Art Month by highlighting the work of budding artists in their elementary and high-school years at the Celebrating Creativity (March 2-11) and Emerging Visions: Interactions (March 17-April 1) exhibits. Elsewhere, Workhouse Arts Center will recognize Women’s History Month with its ongoing Women Now exhibit featuring the work of Jennifer Bartlett, Jenny Holzer, Mickalene Thomas and more. From March 3-26, artists will use the sequel to Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland as inspiration for mind-bending pieces using fisheye lenses and optical illusions in Del Ray Artisans‘ Through the Looking Glass exhibit. While spring blooms early, the Torpedo Factory will have timely exhibits in Digging Deep (March 6-April 2), an exploration of nature and the elements, and Promise of Spring (March 8-April 2), with pieces evoking flowers, birds and vibrant colors. Northern Virginia Community College’s Crumpled Prints exhibit will remain at the Waddel Art Gallery until March 24 featuring carefully colored, printed and compressed—you guessed it—crumpled pieces of paper.

Theater

George Mason’s School of Theater explores figuratively and literally magical puppy love in its musical The Fantasticks (March 2-5) at the Harris Theatre. MetroStage will take on the Pulitzer Prize-winning The Gin Game (through March 12), a story of two characters whose revelations are exposed over an escalating game of gin rummy. NextStop will conclude its run of The Giver, based on Lois Lowry’s dystopian young-adult novel of the same name, on March 12. On a lighter note, the Little Theatre of Alexandria‘s comedy of errors about infidelity and financial quandaries, Key for Two, will close on March 18. Hylton Performing Arts Center will also bring comedy to the stage with Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike (March 17-19, 24-26), following three siblings figuring out life in the absence of their parents. Synetic Theater re-envisions Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew with a vibrant set and powerful choreography until March 19. Reston Community Players will celebrate all things good and ’80s during its performance of the Tony-nominated Rock of Ages (March 10-April 1). And Signature Theatre will begin the month with a ’60s housewife-turned-pop star in Mrs. Miller Does Her Thing (through March 26) and return midmonth with the musical-thriller Midwestern Gothic (March 14-April 30).
