Based on the classic book and television special, Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical is coming to the National Theatre for its D.C.-area premiere this holiday season.

During its stint on Broadway, The Grinch broke box office records for two years in a row, and The New York Times called it “100 times better than any bedside story.” Since then, the touring show has entertained more than 1.8 million people throughout the country.

The unforgettable holiday tale, narrated by Max the Dog, follows the nasty Grinch who takes Christmas away from the Whos down in Whoville. Even though he steals all the presents and decorations, the Grinch can’t take away the true spirit of the holidays, and the Whos help him discover what Christmas is really all about. The musical features the hit songs from the television special, “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and “Welcome Christmas,” along with some catchy original numbers.

We spoke to actor Philip Bryan, who appears as the Grinch, about the show and portraying the iconic children’s story villain-turned-hero:

What made you interested in the story of How the Grinch Stole Christmas?

I think we all can relate to the Grinch in many different ways, and it’s fascinating to have the opportunity to explore his life. He’s the personification of why we, as people, need love. The story interests me, because its message is positive and it leaves all of us with a revived sense of hope for a better tomorrow.

Tell us your favorite part about playing the Grinch.

Cindy-Lou Who. Getting to work opposite of a young child in the earlier stages of their career is humbling. The moment you look in their eyes [and] see the suspension of disbelief, you enter their world and you get to play. Also, I look good in green.

What can families expect from the show?

They can expect a true representation of the story parents read to their children. They’ll see the pages brought to life onstage and become immersed in the fantastic world of Dr. Suess. Their spirits will be uplifted with the abundance of holiday joy and reminded what is the true meaning of Christmas.

Dr. Seuss’ How The Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical will be at the National Theatre from Dec. 13-31.  Tickets can be purchased now online or by calling (800) 514-3849.
