There are new Earth-centered rentals coming to Clarksville — located about a four hour drive from Dulles — next year. The Faireborough at Shiney Rock, dubbed a luxury storybook village, was named for “faire” meaning good, and “borough,” which means place.
The village, which looks like it’s straight out of a fairytale, is designed for travelers who want a place to be creative and comfortable, while also immersed in luxury.
The Faireborough has been a family-owned property for five generations. It was first purchased in the 1920s by Sam and Lula Wilson, who turned it into a working tobacco farm. In 2001, it was passed down to retired Col. Donald G. Wilson, and now it is owned by Wilson’s daughters, who created the retreat that will open next year.
Creature Comforts
Faireborough homes are made to connect to the land, with construction keeping things cooler and quiet. Lighting is softer, with plenty of curved spaces and natural materials. Those who book a getaway receive complimentary fresh sourdough bread, butter, jam, and honey pairings, and a visit to the on-site greenhouse to choose something for dinner.
Each home has soft linens and towels, as well as walk-in showers with bathroom essentials. Kitchens are stocked with coffee and tea stations. There are also private cedar hot tubs.
If you’re an artist, there are quiet spots set aside for writing, sketching, and reading, as well as space to rehearse and develop creative work. There are views that shift with weather conditions and sunlight, and local wildlife to admire too.
Co-owner Laurie Pearson feels that we are in a bit of a pressure cooker these days, and sometimes we just need to “slow the heck down.”
“There’s something about removing yourself from the norm,” she says. “I think stepping out of your environment allows you to do that. And I know when I’m going to travel, I want to go somewhere cool.”
Connecting with Nature
For more outdoor adventures, there are walking paths and picnic areas near streams and under trees. At night, residents can sit by a fire or enjoy stargazing.
“We’re trying to create that overall village and community, and you know, along with agriculture and other activities, we’re planning on having lots of different gardens so you can go get into the dirt and dig up your own potatoes,” Pearson says. “There will be workshops to opt in to as well.”
There are one, two, and three-bedroom options at Faireborough, ranging in size from 845 to 1,285 square feet. Pearson says she’s hoping for a spring 2027 opening.
