If you’re looking to save on airfare, you might not want to fly out of Dulles.
Among the 50 busiest U.S. airports, Dulles International Airport is ranked as the costliest to fly out of domestically. This is according to the latest statistics from the U.S. Department of Transportation, as reported by Axios.
The rankings are based on pricing from the third quarter (Q3) of 2024. The average domestic airfare for a flight out of Washington Dulles was $473. The average for all U.S. airports during Q3 was significantly less at $366. Other expensive airport fares were out of Santa Ana, California, at $428 and San Francisco at $425.
Domestic flights out of Reagan National averaged $359; flights out of Baltimore’s BWI were $349.
Surprisingly, some larger city airports scored among the lowest average fare prices. These include New York’s LaGuardia at $303, Chicago’s Midway at $292, and Las Vegas at $275.
Florida’s Fort Lauderdale airport scored the lowest average price at $252.
The DOT statistics were based on the cost of domestic, round-trip fares. If the customer did not purchase a return trip, one-way fares were included. The fares were based on the total ticket value and did not include fees for optional services such as baggage fees. Averages do not include frequent-flyer or “zero fares.” The inflation adjustment was calculated using dollars for the most recent year of airfare data.
