Taking a trip with your mom or daughter is a great way to reconnect and get to know each other as people rather than through the parent-child relationship lens.
There are fun things you can plan whether you’re looking for an opulent adventure or nature-based travel. Here are a few spots to get you started on your quest for the perfect girls weekend.
If you’re both adults
Barboursville Vineyards is a two-hour drive from Washington, DC, and includes an inn and cottages where you can stay after a long day in the vines. If you’re looking to stay at The 1804 Inn, book the Blue Run Cottage which was originally a dispensary for a physician and has since been converted into three separate suites. The views are stunning and the accommodations provide enough space for a bit of alone time for each of you. To reserve a suite, call 540-832-5384. If one of you is still technically a child
If your daughter is currently obsessed with tea parties, book a quick trip over to The Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City. The hotel is a magical place to introduce your child to high society and an authentic afternoon tea experience. There, you’ll find all the colorful little treats she’s sure to love from macarons to small sandwiches, and, of course, tea in china tea cups. Call 703-412-2762 for inquiries and reservations. The Ritz-Carlton, Pentagon City: 1250 S. Hayes St., Arlington
If you both like a nature-based adventure
If a challenging weekend hike is more up your alley, make your way up Falls Hollow Trail to Elliot Knob. It’s 8.5 miles up the highest peak in Virginia — and no small feat to say you accomplished it with your mother or your daughter. Though challenging, the trail features two waterfalls and stunning views from the top of the fire tower and at the summit. If you’re both in great shape and have been keeping up with your daily step counts, this hike will not disappoint. George Washington National Forest: Millboro
If relaxation and luxury are calling
For those who want something all-inclusive, we recommend The Inn at Willow Grove. The accommodations are top notch, the aestheticians at the spa are experts in skin care, and the restaurant is one of the top places to eat in Orange. There are also plenty of great products at the spa so you can keep up with your skin care regimen or enjoy your own mother-daughter spa day at home. Try Elemis or the Dr. Dennis Gross chemical peel to end your weekend on a glowing note. The Inn of Willow Grove: 14079 Plantation Wy., Orange
