With destination vacations on hold this summer, daytrips have become important for people wanting to get out of the house while still staying safe. If you or your little ones have a planes-and-cars obsession, take a trip to the Commemorative Air Force (CAF) Capital Wing’s “Wings and Wheels” show and “Warbirds Rides Showcase” in Culpeper.
The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 15 and Sunday, Aug. 16 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Culpeper Regional Airport. The “Wings and Wheels” show will be on Saturday, with the “Warbirds Rides Showcase” scheduled for Sunday.
The airport grounds will be full of antique, exotic and modern cars, while the WWII aircrafts take to the sky. In addition to the airplane and car exhibitions, visitors will be able to visit museum exhibits, interact with live re-enactors and participate in STEM activities throughout the day.
There’s also a chance to sign up to be a part of the car show. Whether you have a restored car from the ’60s or something more modern, all car lovers are welcome to show off their ride. Entries are available for $25 before the show or $30 the day of the event. A panel of judges will be awarding prizes to participants in 10 different categories.
On Sunday, visitors can hit the air in a WWII Warbird. Those wanting to take a flight around town can purchase tickets to ride in various aircraft, including the TBM-3E “Avenger,” L-5 “Sentinel” and PT-17 Stearman bi-plane. Flight times range from 20 to 45 minutes, with ticket prices ranging from $89 to $1,349.
Since the show is being held during the pandemic, all attendees are asked to follow the statewide face-covering requirement when in the hangar and museum spaces and consider wearing a face mask while outdoors. // 12517 Beverly Ford Road, Brandy Station; free admission
