Can’t travel to the Atlantic Ocean this summer? Head to this ‘beach’ in the DMV instead

The Beach at Pike & Rose will return to Bethesda during Memorial Day weekend for its second summer season.

Of course you want to get away for Memorial Day weekend. It’s the official kick-off to summer, and trekking to the beach that weekend is an annual tradition for many Northern Virginians.

But, if you won’t be able to head to the ocean this year (or just don’t want to fight three-plus hours of traffic), we have something else in mind for you.

Last year, Pike & Rose, an entertainment, dining and shopping venue, brought the beach to its Bethesda neighborhood, and it’s doing it again for this upcoming summer season—the Beach’s 2019 season kicks off during Memorial Day weekend.

The Beach at Pike & Rose is the brainchild of Federal Realty, the developer of Pike & Rose who ships in picnic tables, umbrellas and 525 tons of sand to transform a parking lot behind Rose Park into a beach scene.

There’s even cabanas, a mural painted to look like the ocean, sand pails and shovels for kids, beach games for all ages and pop-up events planned there throughout the summer. Events include fitness classes and a weekend bar with beachy drink offerings.

The Beach will be open to the public daily, with seating and dining areas along the sand. The space is also available to rent for private events, including birthdays, baby showers and more. For more information, visit pikeandrose.com. // 11580 Old Georgetown Road, Northern Bethesda; free entry
