With interest in women’s sports growing at a rapid rate, it’s about time Washington, DC, added another professional women’s team to its repertoire. Joining the Washington Mystics and Washington Spirit is a new professional women’s soccer team, the DC Power FC. Here’s what you need to know about the team before it kicks off its inaugural season.
The League
The USL Super League was created to give women soccer players another avenue to compete professionally and grow the game. Promoted as a fall-to-summer league, the calendar will allow players to represent their countries on the national level and participate in the women’s transfer market. The first season will feature eight teams, and up to eight more could join in 2025 or later.
The Venue
Audi Field, home to D.C. United and the Washington Spirit, will play host to Power FC’s home games during the inaugural season. The state-of-the-art field, which opened in 2018, can seat up to 20,000 fans. While the Power’s season starts on August 17 against the Carolina Ascent FC, the team’s first home game — against the Fort Lauderdale United FC — isn’t until September 13.
The Players
Jorian Baucom became the inaugural signee for Power FC. The striker previously played for various clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League and Scottish Women’s Premier League before donning the No. 5 jersey in the USL Super League. Power FC added midfielder Anna Bagley and goalkeeper Adelaide Gay to the roster in June. As of press time, the full roster had not been announced.
The Owners
Working in tandem with D.C. United, the ownership group has plenty of familiar faces, from business leaders to celebrities. Owners include Jan Adams (JMA Solutions); Devin Talbott (Enlightenment Capital); Jordan Stuart (Next Move); Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese; Washington Nationals pitcher Josiah Gray; Washington Capitals forward Hendrix Lapierre; and actress Crystal Renee Hayslett.
The Coach
The team tapped Frédéric Brillant as the head coach back in May. Brillant hung up his cleats in 2022, joining the coaching staff at Loudoun United FC and eventually D.C. United as an assistant coach and briefly as interim head coach. He’s also been an assistant coach for the NWSL’s Utah Royals.
