These are the best things to do in NoVA in January

Whether in-person or virtual, these are the events and activities you should make time for this month.

While January may look a little different in 2021, there’s still plenty to do for a fun winter season. Read on for some great ideas of what to do this month.

Take a break from your screens and enjoy a nice walk through The Trails at the MSV. This new park includes 90 acres of green space with over 3 miles of trails that are lined with art sculptures. // Open dawn to dusk; Museum of the Shenandoah Valley: 901 Amherst St., Winchester; free

Brave the blustery streets of Old Town for the first holiday-themed ArtWalk by The Art League. In collaboration with Old Town Business, 25 artists have created holiday-themed lamp post art pieces. Grab a map and browse King Street for some last-minute holiday cheer. // through Jan. 8; various locations along King Street, Alexandria; free 

Reminisce in the fall foliage as winter takes over the region at the Colors of Fall exhibit. Take in the scenes of fall through various media and styles. This exhibit is also available online. // Through Jan. 11, noon-5 p.m.; Workhouse Arts Center: 9518 Workhouse Way, Lorton; free

Check out the recent work of the 2020 Post-Grad Residents at Torpedo Factory Art Center. The exhibition will display the work these residents made during their three-month residencies. Artists include Ashley Llanes, Luis A. Navas-Reyes, Fanni Somogyi and Vi Trinh. // Through Jan. 17; Torpedo Factory Art Center: 105 N. Union St., Alexandria; free

Continue to enjoy outdoor entertainment and drinks at King & Rye’s Winter Wonderland. The courtyard will be full of igloos with heaters to keep you toasty as you dance, drink and snack with your friends. // Through Jan. 30; King & Rye: 480 King St., Alexandria; $50 rental, $100 food and beverage minimum

Before the spring season comes back around, grab your computer for the Online Introduction to Beekeeping Class by The Bee Store. This webinar will show viewers what is involved when beekeeping in NoVA and help attendees decide if they would like to make this a hobby. // Jan. 3, 5-7 p.m.; free

West Virginia native Christian Lopez is making his way to Tally Ho. Having opened for Miranda Lambert, Dave Matthews and Jason Mraz, the singer and his band are bringing their own twist on alternative folk country rock. Make your way to Del Ray Artisans for the opening of Hidden World. The exhibit explores the world that is not visible to the naked eye, including microscopic organisms, the metaphysical world and sounds. Stop by the StageCoach Bandits Improv Comedy Show for a room full of unscripted laughter. Spend the night watching spontaneous skits and getting a well-deserved distraction at this monthly show. // Jan. 15, 7:30-9 p.m.; StageCoach Theatre: 20937 Ashburn Road, Suite 115 and 120, Ashburn; $12-$15

Start planning for a summer full of fun on the water at the annual Fredericksburg Boat Show. Whether you need some small accessories or are looking for a new boat or Jet Skis, this is the place to be. // Jan. 15-17; Fredericksburg Expo & Conference Center: 2371 Carl D. Enjoy a morning of travel while staying cozy at home with the Smithsonian Associates’ Shenandoah National Park: Natural History Highlights. Join naturalist Keith Tomlinson as he uncovers the secrets of the park, its geology and the human history in the region. // Jan. 16, 10-11:15 a.m.; $25-$30

Try your hand at drawing at Greenhouse Studios’ Pet Portraits Virtual Workshop. Join artist Ally Morgan as she guides you to create the perfect portrait of your four-legged friend. The workshop will include lectures and demonstrations with watercolor, pens and colored pencils. // Jan. 16, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.; $100

Join the Reston Community Center for the 36th annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration. The celebration will include community service projects, the memorial concert and a special performance by Akua Allrich and the Tribe. // Jan. 16-18; Reston Community Center: 2310 Colts Neck Road, Reston; free, $15-$30 for Akua Allrich and the Tribe

Nineties hit singer CeCe Peniston is making a stop in Alexandria. The Billboard charting artist is best known for her hit “Finally” along with “Keep on Walkin” and “We Got A Love Thang” off her debut album Finally. // Jan. 17, 7:30 p.m.; The Birchmere: 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria; $45

Grammy-nominated artist Joan Osborne is taking the stage at Wolf Trap. The “One of Us” singer recently released her new album, Trouble and Strife, which combines pop, soul, blues and country and touches on plenty of relevant issues, including climate change, disinformation and immigration. // Jan 22 & 23, 8 p.m.; The Barns at Wolf Trap: 1635 Trap Road, Vienna; $42

If you love musicals, head over to Franklin Park Performing Arts Center’s Classic Movie Musicals Nights. This movie night will show a surprise musical every month.
