We all can all relate to a so-called Ebenezer Scrooge during the holiday season.

“Bah! Humbug!,” we might exclaim when we need to buy an extra gift, end up stuck in traffic or can’t get additional time off from work. But, in efforts to making the holiday season just a smidge simpler, here’s our guide on where to catch this year’s local performances of A Christmas Carol, featuring Scrooge himself, as well as the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Get ready to marvel in the Christmas spirit, the good and the bad, that is.

Ford’s Theatre
Nov. 21 through Jan. 1, times vary
The nation’s capital is no stranger to celebrating the holiday season, and the annual performances of A Christmas Carol at Ford’s Theatre are just one of the many traditions. For the 2019 season, acclaimed actor Craig Wallace returns to play Ebenezer Scrooge, while the production celebrates the Christmas spirit through musical moments, sharing stories and having fun. // Ford’s Theatre: 511 10th St. NW, Washington, DC; $22-$124

The Little Theatre of Alexandria
Dec. 6-22, times vary
The short journey of a miserly Victorian humbug is brightened to life at The Little Theatre of Alexandria with special effects, Victorian carols and Tiny Tim, making the performance a local tradition for everyone to enjoy. Opening night is already sold out, so if you’re looking to catch one of the recurring performances of the production this year, be sure to get your tickets before the Christmas countdown officially begins! // The Little Theatre of Alexandria: 600 Wolfe St., Alexandria; $20 per person

Riverside Center for the Performing Arts
Dec. 21, 7 p.m.
Based on a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic, follow Andrew and his family as they travel to their Aunt’s country cottage in order to snap their brother out of his not-so-Christmasy spirit. When a  power outage challenges the “grown-up” family Christmas plan, they later share Christmas tales that evoke the fun, happiness and magic of the Christmas season for everyone. // Riverside Center for the Performing Arts: 95 Riverside Parkway, Fredericksburg; prices vary
