The Potomac River is the centerpiece for all of Lansdowne Resort and Spa’s new amenities that are open to guests and the public. The resort partnered with Fish and Explore, a group dedicated to connecting adolescents to the wonders of nature, and is offering numerous ways to explore the waterways for those 14 and up.
Sunrise and Sunset Paddles allow for leisurely self-reflection at the onset and close of the day. The Historic Paddle delves into the Potomac’s past: its transportation value as well as the construction and use of the C&O and Goose Creek Canals. The Explore Tour Paddle serves a similar purpose, featuring island stops intertwined with stories and lore about the area.
For the anglers-at-heart there are several opportunities, including Guided Kayak Fishing, which couples the two pastimes into one exhilarating activity. There are tutorials offered for fly and spin casting, too.
Lansdowne Resort and Spa is sprawled across 476 acres along the Potomac River, an area rich in history and natural wonders. The newest activities take their appreciation of the area to the next level. “We are extremely passionate about the land and wanted to celebrate it by giving people the opportunity to experience it,” says Sarah Crisafulli, the resort’s director of communications.
Time duration for the activities ranges widely—explorers can stay on the water from 1.5 hours to a full 8-hour day. Trips include transportation to and from the launch point in Algonkian Park. Rates start at $150 per person.
After a day on the water, unwind at the resort’s new outdoor cocktail restaurant and bar, Fanny’s Garden. Drink options include five different cocktails and a list of local wines and beers. Executive chef Marcus Repp’s dining menu also consists of locally sourced ingredients inspired by the herbs grown in the resort’s own garden. The establishment will be open as long as weather permits, likely through October.
If you’re eager to grab a quick bite and head out on the trails, stop by Spoke ‘N Dog, a gourmet hot dog stand and bike rental shop located at the start of the Heritage Trail on the Potomac River. In addition to their unique hot dog menu, there are wraps, ice cream and drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
Lansdowne is currently offering a Summer on the Potomac activities package for two or more people that includes overnight accommodations, guided kayaking excursions and hikes and snacks to enjoy on the water. Prices start at $367. // Lansdowne Resort and Spa: 44050 Woodridge Parkway, Leesburg
