Saturday is a big day for little dogs in Washington, DC. The annual Running of the Chihuahuas at the Wharf is back on May 2.
During the event, more than 150 chihuahuas will compete in a 60-foot race down a track on the District Pier. They’ll run in groups of eight, and the fastest from each group will move on to the winner’s bracket until organizers declare a champion. Winners will take home gifts and prizes.
Spectators can watch the action live in person and on two big-screen TVs around the Wharf.
The event will also feature a parade of adoptable dogs and a doggy costume contest. While the races are only open to chihuahuas, any breed can enter the costume contest.
Visitors can also enjoy a Pacifico beer garden, a DJ, and an inflatable chihuahua available for photo opportunities. There will be a Tito’s Chihuahua Lounge on Transit Pier serving a Tito’s-based specialty cocktail, and some restaurants around the Wharf will also offer themed cocktails named after adoptable dogs.
The proceeds for this event benefit Rural Dog Rescue. Over the past 13 years, this event has raised more than $50,000 for animal welfare organizations.
The event runs May 2 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the District Pier at the Wharf: 101 District Sq. SW, Washington, DC. Attendance is free; race registration is $30 per dog.
