Cinephiles, take note: The annual Alexandria Film Festival kicks off this weekend. The event includes 62 independent films — half of which were made by local filmmakers.
The festival kicks off on Sunday, November 2, then continues from Friday, November 7, to Sunday, November 9. Screenings are held at the NoVA campus of Virginia Tech, the Lyceum, the Old Town Patagonia store, and the Charles E. Beatley Library.
The lineup includes several works that debuted at renowned national festivals such as SXSW and Tribeca. Brother Verses Brother was produced by Francis Ford Coppola and directed by Ari Gold. The documentary Checkpoint Zoo was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. And the award-winning film Coexistence, My Ass! is eligible for Oscar consideration.
Local films include The Other You, the directorial debut of Shoshana Rosenbaum; documentary Upstream, Downriver: Uniting for Water Justice; and dramatic comedy 500 Fireflies, filmed primarily in the Shenandoah Valley with local actors.
“We are incredibly proud and excited to uplift and give a platform to the compelling stories that filmmakers across our region are producing,” said Chris Colligan, lead programmer and vice chair of the festival.
The full Alexandria Film Festival schedule is available online. Single-film tickets are $15, and all-festival passes are $80.
