On Saturday, October 25, horse racing enthusiasts from across the country will gather at Great Meadow in The Plains for the 88th running of the International Gold Cup. One of the largest steeplechase race-meets in the United States, this event combines thrilling competition, picturesque surroundings and festive tailgating.

History and Tradition
The first International Gold Cup was held in Tennessee in 1930. It was moved to Virginia in 1984. That first year, the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, an avid equestrian and passionate supporter of horse racing, contributed the spectacular gold trophy still awarded annually to the winner today.
Unlike the Triple Crown, where horses race on a flat track, steeplechase racing involves jumps and obstacles requiring skill, stamina and athleticism from the horse, trainer and jockey. Horses leap over hedges and wooden fences around a four-mile grass course to reach a photo finish.
International Gold Cup has become the premier fall equestrian event in the United States, and competitors from the United Kingdom, Ireland, and France travel to compete at Great Meadow.
Event Highlights
Held on the same course as its spring counterpart, the Virginia Gold Cup, both steeplechase events offer pari-mutuel wagering. This adds an extra element of excitement for seasoned bettors and new fans. But everyone can join in the competition by participating in the hat and tailgate contests.
Gold Cup attendees setup lavish tailgate parties with gourmet spreads, and standouts can win top honors, along with bragging rights. Another beloved tradition is the hat contest. You’ll see big Kentucky Derby hats with feathers and simple fascinators, but the overall look wins the day.

Supporting Virginia’s Equine Community and Land Preservation
The International Gold Cup is not only a thrilling sporting event but also a vital supporter of Virginia’s robust horse industry. The Commonwealth is home to more than 215,000 horses, according to the Virginia Horse Industry Board. Events like the International Gold Cup help support local trainers, jockeys, and breeders, and contribute to the protection of Virginia’s rural landscape.
