If you’re a basset hound lover, you’re in luck. A festival dedicated specifically to the breed is being held this weekend in NoVA. The BROOD Ramble, an annual fundraiser for the Basset Rescue of Old Dominion (BROOD), is Saturday, September 13, at Frying Pan Farm Park. It features hound races, contests, and photo opportunities.
The event is hosted by BROOD, a nonprofit organization that promotes the humane treatment and adoption of basset hound rescues in the DMV. This is the 28th year it will host the free event. Registration starts at 9:30 a.m., and activities run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Throughout the day, guests and their pups can enjoy a range of events spotlighting the hounds. These include contests in categories like Longest Ears, Best Tail Wagger, and Best Howler. There will also be agility contests like bar jumps and a tunnel run, plus a pie-eating contest.
The most iconic event of the day is the Basset 500 Race. Dogs will run in three heats: boys, girls, and seniors (age 8 and older). The race kicks off at 1:30 p.m.
For those who don’t already have a basset hound, there will be adoptable dogs on site to “rent” for an hour or the whole day. Guest can also participate in the silent auction, shop at a BROOD store, and purchase raffle tickets to support the nonprofit.
