Look to the sky this week for a chance to see most of the moon disappear into the Earth’s shadow. A deep partial lunar eclipse will take place Thursday night into Friday. The event will begin at 10:34 p.m. and be visible throughout the Americas, according to NASA.

During an eclipse, the moon passes through Earth’s shadow, making it appear as though part of the moon is disappearing. The darkened portion of the moon may also take on a coppery color. The eclipse will reach its greatest point at 4:13 a.m. when 96.3 percent of the moon’s disk will be within Earth’s darkest shadow, also known as the umbra.

You can observe the lunar eclipse without any special equipment. The eclipse will be visible throughout the Americas, except for Alaska and northwestern Canada.
