The 11 Best Things to Do in Northern Virginia and DC This Labor Day Weekend

See a new play, visit a local music festival, or stay up late at a drive-in theater this weekend.

Ready for a long weekend full of music, food, and art? Check out these weekend events happening around Northern Virginia and Washington, DC, from August 28 to September 1.  

The Black Keys 

August 28 

Rock duo The Black Keys takes the stage in Columbia for a night of bluesy riffs and garage-rock anthems. The Grammy-winning band is known for electric live performances.

From Dusk ’til Dawn at the Family Drive-In 

August 29–31 

The Family Drive-In in Stephens City is hosting three days of all-night movies. There are two screens, each with five back-to-back movies. On the first screen, there’s Lilo, Bad Guys 2, Fantastic 4, Jurassic Rebirth, and F1. On the other, there’s Minecraft, How to Train Your Dragon, Superman, Sinners, and Final Destination. Screenings start around 8 p.m. and go all night. 5890 Valley Pk., Stephens City, $14 per person 

Jaws: 50th Anniversary 

August 29–September 1 

It’s the 50th anniversary of the iconic shark movie, and the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum is celebrating with special IMAX screening events at the DC and Chantilly museum locations this weekend. 14390 Air and Space Museum Pkwy., Chantilly, free 

Doxie Derby: Daschund Rescue Race 

August 30, 11 a.m.–6 p.m. 

Head over to the Henway Hard Cider Barn at Great Country Farms to watch as dachshunds race as fast as their little legs can carry them. It’s the grand finale to the Watermelon Bash & Crawl event, which brings vendors like Blue Ridge Pickling and Loudoun Wicks to the venue. The race kicks off at 4 p.m. 34345 Snickersville Tpk., Bluemont, $13, $11 for kids 3–17 

Virginia Scottish Games 

August 30–31 

Ready for a weekend of bagpipes, kilts, and haggis? The Scottish Games are back for the 51st year, celebrating Scottish culture with two days of activities. It includes competitions like piping and drumming, athletic competitions, plus music. There will be several food vendors, plus opportunities to taste authentic Scottish whisky. Great Meadow: 5089 Old Tavern Rd., starting around $27 

LoCo Fest 

August 31, 12–9 p.m. 

This local music festival at 868 Vineyards will have a lineup of at least 17 bands in genres like rock, country, and folk. Plus, it will have wine, beer, and food trucks, including beer from Lost Rhino. Proceeds from the event benefit Loudoun County musicians. 14001 Harpers Ferry Rd., Hillsboro, starting at $28.52, free for kids 16 and under 

National Symphony Orchestra Labor Day Concert 

August 31, 8 p.m. 

The National Symphony Orchestra will host its annual, free Labor Day concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Enrico Lopez-Yañez is the conductor. It’s free, with no need to register, just get there early to claim a spot on the lawn. E. Capitol Street NE and First Street SE, Washington, DC, free 

DC JazzFest 

Through August 31 

Celebrate the soulful music of jazz at this five-day festival. The weekend event features a lineup of legendary artists, emerging talent, and outdoor concerts along the waterfront. The Wharf: 1001 Seventh St. SW, Washington, DC, prices vary by event

26th Annual Labor Day Car Show 

September 1, 8 a.m.–2 p.m. 

Automobile lovers, head to Old Town Fairfax for a display of all kinds of cars: some vintage, some new, some domestic, some foreign. Last year’s display included a total of 371 vehicles. The event is put on by the City of Fairfax and the Clifton Lions Club, and all proceeds go to local charities. 4089 University Dr., Fairfax, free

Bond In Motion at the International Spy Museum 

Through September 1 

If you haven’t had the chance to explore the International Spy Museum’s special exhibition on James Bond vehicles, now is your last opportunity. Visitors will get to explore iconic vehicles from six decades of films. 700 L’Enfant Plz. SW, Washington, DC, $10.60 or $8.48 when combined with museum admission 

The Inheritance at Round House Theatre 

Through October 19 

This new play just opened this week, and it’s one you won’t want to miss. Considered “the most awarded play of our generation,” The Inheritance follows a group of gay men in New York during the aftermath of the AIDs crisis. It’s staged as two separate plays. 4545 East-West Hwy., Bethesda, Maryland, starting around $47 per part
