Looking for budget-friendly family outing ideas? Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum is hosting free arts and crafts workshops for all ages.
On Saturday, March 29, guests are invited to decorate flat wooden eggs, create bookmarks, make paper animal art, and more. The event will run from noon to 2 p.m.
If you can’t make the March 29 arts and crafts workshop, the museum is hosting another one on Saturday, April 12, also from noon to 2 p.m. The spring-themed crafts will include wooden tulips, butterfly suncatchers, bunny masks, and pinwheels. Local artist Tamara Thomas will lead the activities.
Leave time before or after the workshops to explore the museum’s exhibition, A Bold & Beautiful Vision. The exhibit showcases the talented teachers and students in DC’s segregated schools who made Washington a vibrant center for Black arts education. It includes original artworks, rare video footage, and an array of artifacts, like Alma Thomas’s watercolor paint set and a lifelike marionette that William Buckner made with his high school students.
According to its website, “The Smithsonian’s Anacostia Community Museum (ACM) aspires to illuminate and share the untold, and often overlooked stories of people furthest from opportunity in the Greater Washington DC region. … At ACM, we celebrate stories of resiliency, joy, and strength. Our hope is to affirm, uplift, and inspire those who visit us to translate their ideas into action. We invite you to join us in our collective work to build a more equitable future for all.”
ACM offers free admission and hosts a variety of events for all ages. It’s open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 1901 Fort Place SE, Washington, DC
