Stumpy is gone but not forgotten. Thousands visited the little cherry tree last spring before it was removed as part of the National Park Service’s efforts to repair the seawalls along the Tidal Basin.

Now, you can paddle for a purpose in Stumpy’s honor.

As part of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, Boating in DC is holding the 1st Annual Stumpy’s Petals and Paddles Race. The event will take place on March 20 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Tidal Basin Boathouse.

Paddle boats will race in six timed heats with 24 boats per heat. Twelve will be launched from west side and 12 launched from east side. Racers will pedal towards the Jefferson Memorial, go around a buoy, then head along the east side of the Tidal Basin. Organizers will award prizes for fastest heat times and best team costume.

Registration is $100 per team of two, and $20 for additional team members. The event is open to all ages.

Fifty percent of net proceeds will be donated to the Trust for the National Mall Cherry Tree Endowment Fund. The fund’s goal is to help preserve and protect the cherry trees for future generations.
