The Great Backyard Bird Count is upon us! From February 14 to 17, bird-watchers around the world are encouraged to observe the birds around them and report what they find.
The Great Backyard Bird Count is an “online participatory science project” run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Birds Canada to help ornithologists better understand bird’s populations and migratory patterns.
Here’s how it works: You pick a spot in nature and watch for birds for at least 15 minutes. Take note of any birds you see or hear, recording what type of bird it is and how many you saw. Then, report what you find online.
You don’t have to be a seasoned birdwatcher to participate. For beginners, the website recommends using the free Merlin Bird ID app, which can help identify any species you spot.
In 2024, birdwatchers from 210 countries participated in the Great Backyard Bird Count, identifying more than 7,900 species.
