A New Underground Baseball and Hockey Performance Facility Opens in Clarendon

This new training facility is helping young athletes reach their full potential, both on the ice and at the ballpark.

A new, 22,000-square-foot training facility is open now in an underground facility in Clarendon. This new space, Corobus, is dedicated to training young athletes in baseball, softball, and hockey while teaching the value of hard work and dedication.

Corobus launched with a soft opening on December 1 at 2800 Clarendon Blvd., with plans for a grand opening in February. The underground space was formerly occupied by Washington Sports Club and Jumping Joeys.

“Originally we were going to build just a small hockey facility because there’s not enough ice in Arlington,” says co-founder Henry White, adding that he used to have to take his son all the way to Reston for lessons. “We felt like there was a hole, and as we started digging, we realized it was the same thing for turf.”

So he founded Corobus and enlisted professional instruction from organizations such as Elite Hockey Science (EHS) and Gold Glove Academy. (The name takes inspiration from Coroebus of Elis, the first recorded winner of the Olympic games in Greece in 776 BC.)

White says Corobus has already left a lasting impression on its players and their parents. “[EHS] had one parent walk out and say in one training session, her son shot harder than he ever shot in his life,” White says.

Corobus’ key goal is player development and improvement, in the hopes of creating great athletes and even better people. Currently, the facility offers classes for students ages 6 through 23, but it may soon introduce more adult classes.

Corobus has two synthetic ice-skating rinks and turf batting cages, two of which feature HitTrax technology. There’s a strength and conditioning gym with free weights and cardio machines for players to add to their training regime, plus a parent’s lounge.

Players can work out individually by renting a turf lane or by scheduling a stick-and-shoot appointment for one hour, starting at $20.

So why is it underground? White says the owners were drawn to this space for its central location in Arlington. And while they weren’t deliberately seeking underground space, it helps keep noise from traveling too far.

Corobus also hosts a plethora of events, birthday parties, and camps for kids to attend. For example, a “Player’s Night Out” event on Saturdays allows young athletes to participate in fun activities for an evening.

Corobus is also looking into potentially adding golf simulators and a mini golf course in the near future.

Corobus has monthly and annual membership plans, starting at $79 a month for individuals and $129 for families. Memberships are temporarily on sale for $59 for individuals and $99 for families until February 28. This includes small group and private training sessions, special offers and discounts, early access to events and programs, and other amenities within the facility.
