Where to Find Beautiful Waterfall Views in NoVA This Summer

The cascades at these four area parks are picture-worthy sights.

Northern Virginia is surrounded by greenery, and that means there are sure to be plenty of stunning natural features to be explored. The warm weather and shade-covered trails make it the perfect time to check out the waterfalls cascades across the region.

Great Falls Park

The region’s most famous waterfalls can be found at this national park. With three overlooks to choose, you have options to take in stunning views of the rushing water. Great Falls Park also features 10 different hiking trails for you to take in the sounds and beauty of the surrounding area. While guests are welcome to view the falls, swimming and wading are not permitted in the park. 9200 Old Dominion Dr., McLean, $10–$20 for entrance pass

Scott’s Run Nature Preserve

At Scott’s Run, you can get a lot closer to the falls themselves by hiking in this Fairfax County park. Head down the Potomac Heritage Trail and take in the sights along the trail before you hit the Potomac River. Once at the destination, you can snap some pictures or just take in the scenery. 7400 Georgetown Pk., McLean, free

Winkler Botanical Preserve

Once a family-owned preserve, Alexandria’s Winkler Botanical Preserve is the latest addition to NOVA Parks. The urban oasis boasts multiple hiking trails, streams, a lake, and a stunning waterfall. Guests should be aware that fishing and swimming are not permitted. Visitors should refrain from rock climbing. 5400 Roanoke Ave., Alexandria, free

Lake Accotink Park

Sure, it’s not a natural waterfall, but it still provides those soothing sounds that you’re looking for. The dam that sits on the edge of Lake Accotink cascades over like a waterfall. A recently completed pedestrian bridge gives walkers, joggers, and hikers an aerial view of the area while keeping wildlife safe. 7500 Accotink Park Rd., Springfield, free
