The weekend of June 16–18 is jam-packed with festive events. There’s something for everyone – check out these six ideas.

By Olivia Garrone June 15, 2023 at 10:26 am

There’s lots to celebrate this weekend, with Father’s Day on Sunday and Juneteenth on Monday. Combined with the usual summer fun, you’ll find no shortage of events.

Portside in Old Town Summer Festival

Friday, June 16, 6–9 p.m., and Saturday, June 17, 1–9 p.m.

Start your summer off right with this two-day event in Old Town Alexandria. It’s filled with music, food, and fun. ALX Jazz Fest performers take the stage Friday night, and there will be music all day Saturday. The festival features opportunities for hands-on fun as well: give chocolate making a try with Historic Alexandria, engage in some lighthearted competition at Ting Internet’s Lawn Game Zone, or create upcycled art of your own with Alexandria’s Upcycle. Made in ALX will have items for sale. Vendors will have food and drinks, including craft beer from Port City Brewing. Waterfront Park: 1A Prince St., Alexandria, free

2023 Zero Prostate Cancer 5K

Saturday, June 17, 7–10 a.m.

Come together to celebrate prostate cancer survivors, honor those who have died, and raise money to support free prostate cancer screenings. It’s free to register. Participants who raise $50 or more will get a T-shirt. The events include a 5K walk/run and a kids’ dash. There is also a virtual race option. Pentagon Row Courtyard: 1101 S. Joyce St., Arlington, free but donations and fundraising encouraged

Fairfax Juneteenth Celebration

This year, the City of Fairfax is collaborating with Mount Calvery Baptist Church for a Juneteenth event. The event will begin with a formal ceremony before a parade. The afternoon will feature craft and informational vendors, music and dance, and a talk about the civil rights work of James Mott. 10455 Armstrong St., Fairfax, free

Fredericksburg Independent Book Festival

Saturday, June 17, 10–4 p.m.

More than 60 authors from a full range of genres will be on hand. Find your next favorite read. You’ll get to stroll through Riverfront Park, enjoy music and food, and connect with writers and readers alike. Riverfront Park: 713 Sophia St., Fredericksburg, free

26th Annual Columbia Pike Blues Festival

Saturday, June 17, 1–8:30 p.m.

Surround yourself with the soulful sounds of a festival dedicated to blues, jazz, and bluegrass music. This year’s headliner is Judith Hill, a soul singer, songwriter, and guitarist who was featured in the Grammy- and Oscar-award winning documentary 20 Feet from Stardom as well as The Voice. The musical lineup includes Annika Chambers and Paul DesLauriers, Bobby Thompson, the Gayle Harrod Band, and Spice Cake Blues. To keep the whole family entertained, the fest will feature a KidZone (complete with a moon bounce), interactive art activities, and a wide selection of vendors. 922 S.
