Virginia Victuals
As evidenced by this story, there are lots of ways to mark Juneteenth in NoVA. But for someone like me who’s equally enchanted with food and history, it’s necessary to make a pilgrimage to Frying Pan Park in Herndon. Dr. Kelley Fanto Deetz will discuss her book Bound to the Fire: How Virginia’s Enslaved Cooks Helped Invent American Cuisine at 12:45 p.m., just in time for lunch from one of the food vendors serving African-American cuisine. 2739 W. Ox Rd., Herndon –Alice Levitt, food editor/critic

Bounce House
This week marks the end of school for my nieces and nephews. Being the fun aunt that I am, we are going to celebrate in style. With middle and elementary schoolers in the bunch, an end-of-the-year trip to Best of NoVA winner Skyzone will do just the trick. Who doesn’t love jumping? Plus, taking them gives me an excuse to take part in the fun. –Michele Kettner, associate digital and research editor

Going Bananas
I’m going to try these frozen-drink recipes from the owner of Trummer’s, starting with the Bananas Foster Daiquiri–I knew there was a reason I hadn’t gotten around to making bread from the bananas currently overripening in my kitchen. –Kelly Kendall, editor
