5 park events to attend during Memorial Day weekend

A three-day weekend calls for fun under the sun.

With a three-day weekend coming up, enjoy the extra time off by spending some of it outside. From starting the weekend off with a campfire to taking a sunrise walk through the garden, these are the park events to head to this weekend.

Lakeside Campfire Fridays

Friday, 8 p.m.
Kick off Memorial Day weekend with a campfire. Enjoy the company of others as you explore different areas of the park, make delicious s’mores, and much more. // Lake Accotink Park: 7500 Accotink Park Rd., Springfield; $8

Roving Ranger – Waterfront

Saturday & Sunday, 1-2 p.m.
Tag along with the park’s roving ranger for a special trip around the park. Explore the waterfront as you learn about the animals that call the park home, and even learn how to save a skunk. // Lake Anna State Park: 6800 Lawyers Rd., Spotsylvania; free

5:30 a.m. Garden Opening

Sunday, 5:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.
Rise and shine this Sunday to start your morning at the park. Whether you’re looking to go bird watching, snap some pics, or just take a morning walk at sunrise, the garden will be open for all activities. // Meadowlark Botanical Gardens: 9750 Meadowlark Gardens Ct., Vienna; $3-$6

Do the Rot Things – Composting 101

Sunday, 3-4 p.m.
Looking to make your lifestyle more sustainable? Then look at adding composting. Lean how to turn your kitchen scraps into garden gold and other composting tips. // Mason Neck State Park: 7301 High Point Rd., Lorton; free

Guided Kayak Paddle

Monday, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
Enjoy your extra day off out on the water. Tour the Occoquan Regional Park by kayak as you learn about the cultural and natural history of the area and catch a peek of the local wildlife. // Occoquan Regional Park: 9751 Ox Rd., Lorton; $35
