Spooky Stories
After my month-long spook fest, it is time to wrap up October with one last Halloween fright. This Friday, I plan on making my way over to the Ben Lomond Historic Site in Manassas for a night of ghost stories by the campfire. The building used to serve as a Civil War hospital, farm and private home in its past and many have claimed to have encounters with ghosts; so there should definitely be some strange activity the night before Halloween. If you want to learn more about Virginia’s spooky past, check out one of these haunted sites around the state. – Michele Kettner, editorial assistant // Oct. 30, 7:30-9 p.m.; Ben Lomond Historic Site: 10321 Sudley Manor Drive, Manassas; $5

A Winery and a Walk
I’ll admit I’m a bit intimidated by the thought of winter arriving. While I’ve handled staying close to home fairly well, being able to get outside has been my saving grace. So, I’m soaking up all the outdoor time while I can. This weekend, I plan to hit up one (or two) of these hikes that allow you to end your exercise at a winery. Because who can’t use some exercise … and a drink right about now? -Katie Bianco/editor

Word Nerd
I moved to the area during the pandemic, so most of the museums I was told would be a highlight of living in NoVA have been shuttered since I’ve been here. That’s why I’m stoked that a new one has just opened. Planet Word in DC is dedicated to teaching visitors about etymology and language. As a former aspiring linguist, this is almost embarrassingly exciting for me. Time for a tarriance to the museum! – Alice Levitt, food editor/critic
