Jubilee Voices celebrates a decade of preserving African American music and history

To honor the 10 years of performing and preserving African American songs, dances and stories, the DC-based group will host an event in late July.

By Holly Gambrell July 17, 2020 at 2:06 pm

For 10 years, the Washington Revels Jubilee Voices have been performing and preserving African American tradition in the DC region through songs, dances and stories, and now it’s time to celebrate the decade of success.

All this month, the Revels have been posting to social media in a special series called “Jubilee July,” building up to a virtual anniversary event on Friday, July 31.

The presentation will be broadcast on Facebook Live and will feature a 45- to 60-minute video production, combining live and pre-recorded musical performances, dramatic readings and more African American traditions. Members of Jubilee Voices, as well as guest performers, will helm the event. As with all Washington Revels programs, the audience has the opportunity (and is encouraged!) to sing along.

The “Jubilee July” social media series includes a reading of Frederick Douglass’ 1852 speech “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July,” as well as video spotlights introducing ensemble members, reposts of photos and recordings of past concerts and media appearances and Daily Antidotes of Song.

For more information on the “Jubilee July” campaign, as well as links to past social media presentations and more details on the July 31 celebration, visit revelsdc.org/jubilee-voices.
