Each summer, the National Wildlife Federation honors exploring the outdoors through camping with its Great American Campout. While the celebration continues all summer long, camping grounds across the country participate at the peak of camping season by hosting a variety of events, which falls on Saturday, June 22 this year. Here, we share how parks in Northern Virginia are taking part in this year’s festivities.

Dixon Park
June 21-22, 6 p.m.-10 a.m.
While Dixon Park isn’t a traditional campsite, it’s embracing its wild side by giving individuals the opportunity to camp at the park for an evening of games, campfire and various pool activities. Guests are encouraged to bring their own tents, but dinner and breakfast will be supplied. // Dixon Park: 1300 Dixon St., Fredericksburg; $10

Mason Neck State Park
June 22, 2-5 p.m.
With several hiking trails, a picnic area and bay-access with on-site water activities, Mason Neck State Park is the perfect place to celebrate Great American Campout Day. The afternoon will consist of informational events that range in topic from use of camping equipment to which wildlife exists above the ground, but below the trees. While camping is not permitted on the grounds, neighboring Pohick Bay Regional Park has plenty of space for those who want to grapple with the outdoors overnight. // Mason Neck State Park: 7301 High Point Road, Lorton; $7

Leesylvania State Park
June 22-23, 7 p.m.-10 a.m.
Enjoy an evening alongside the historic Potomac River at Leesylvania State Park. Whether you are staying the night with family, friends or both, you’ll enjoy a series of ranger-guided programs about the basics of camping. Following the programming, sit back and relax while you embrace the sounds of nature, the heat of a blazing fire and the delicious taste of s’mores. // Leesylvania State Park: 2001 Daniel K. Ludwig Drive, Woodbridge; $5

Sky Meadows State Park
June 22-23, noon-11:45 p.m.
Grab the whole family and head over to historic Mount Bleak for an exciting night of camping you won’t want to miss. First time camping? No problem! Park rangers will be on site to assist with tent set up, as well as share information about the area. Plus, there will be a variety of programming throughout the event, including nature hikes, cooking demonstrations, s’mores and so much more. // Sky Meadows State Park: 11012 Edmonds Lane, Delaplane; $30
