From beginners to experts, birders of all expertise will enjoy these winter bird-watching events happening in NoVA parks.

Waterfowl Prowl
Dec. 29, 11 a.m.-noon
Discover which waterfowl species can be seen in Belmont Bay during the winter season. A ranger will lead the group through the park, with a long-range scope to help you identify the birds. // Mason Neck State Park: 7301 High Point Road, Lorton; free

Eagle Watch
Dec. 30, 3-4 p.m.
Catch eagles soaring over the open water of Belmont Bay during the Eagle Watch hosted at Mason Neck State Park. A ranger will help you learn the differences between birds of prey. // Mason Neck State Park: 7301 High Point Road, Lorton; free

Birding for Beginners
Jan. 6, 8-11 a.m.
Learn the basics of bird-watching at Huntley Meadows Park. An expert will lead you through the park, pointing out the birds and teaching you basic identification skills. // Huntley Meadows Park: 3701 Lockheed Blvd., Alexandria; $10

Winter Waterfowl Hike
Jan. 25, 9-11 a.m.
A naturalist will lead the group on a search for winter waterfowl along the Upper Potomac River. Bring your own binoculars and/or spotting scopes. // Riverbend Park: 8700 Potomac Hills St., Great Falls; $8

Royal Lake, Lakeside Park
Jan. 31, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Royal Lake has a multitude of winter waterfowl to spot, while the hiking trail itself is a good place to catch glimpse of kinglets and woodpeckers. Phil Silas of the Northern Virginia Bird Club will be leading the tour. // Lakeside Park: 5216 Pommeroy Drive, Fairfax; free

Audubon Society Northern Virginia’s Bird Walk at Burke Lake
Feb. 13, 8:30-11:30 a.m.
Walk around the lake to spot waterfowl, as the species are always changing in the area. You may even spot the resident eagles. // Burke Lake: 7315 Ox Road, Fairfax Station; free

Dyke Marsh Sunday Morning Bird Walks
Every Sunday, 8 a.m.
Friends of Dyke Marsh organizers lead bird walks every Sunday morning to identify birds of the season. Meet in the south parking lot near the Belle Haven picnic area. // Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve: Alexandria; free

Huntley Meadows Monday Morning Birdwalk
Every Monday, 7 a.m.
Recurring weekly, the Monday Morning Birdwalk at Huntley Meadows Park takes place rain or shine and is open to all levels of birders. Meet in the parking lot at the park’s entrance. // Huntley Meadows Park: 3701 Lockheed Blvd., Alexandria; free
