As the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, communities across the region are adding special America250 programming to their traditional parades, concerts and fireworks displays.
Whether you’re looking for a small-town celebration, a history-filled tribute or one of the area’s largest fireworks shows, these events offer plenty of ways to celebrate America’s milestone birthday.
Alexandria
America250 Programs and Historic Celebrations
As George Washington’s hometown, Alexandria is playing a major role in the nation’s 250th anniversary commemoration. Throughout 2026, the city is hosting special exhibitions, tours, public art projects and historical programming highlighting its Revolutionary-era significance. Arlington
Prime Viewing for Washington’s Fireworks
While Arlington does not host a large municipal fireworks display, it offers some of the best vantage points for viewing the National Mall fireworks. Popular spots include Long Bridge Park, Gravelly Point, the Mount Vernon Trail and the grounds surrounding the Marine Corps War Memorial.
Fairfax
Fairfax City Independence Day Celebration
Celebrating its 60th year, Fairfax City’s Independence Day festivities include a hometown celebration, the annual July 4 parade at 10 a.m. through downtown and an evening fireworks display at Fairfax High School. Commemoration of the First Public Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Virginia

The John Champe Chapter of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution is sponsoring a commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Virginia. Visitors can experience historical reenactments, sign a replica of the Declaration and participate in a ceremonial bell ringing as the nation marks its semiquincentennial.
