Clear Out Clutter and Donate Your Items for a Good Cause

Instead of donating your unwanted items to a for-profit thrift store, consider these Northern Virginia organizations.

By Megan Perry April 18, 2025 at 11:50 am

You’ve done your spring cleaning and purged your closets, but now you’re left with an assortment of items in need of a new home. If they’re in good condition, there are several places throughout Northern Virginia that accept donated clothing and household items for a good cause.

Northern Viginia Family Service

This private, nonprofit organization serves Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun, and Prince William counties and the city of Alexandria with a mission of empowering community members to improve their quality of life and encouraging support for families in need. Northern Virginia Family Services collects food, clothing, household items, toiletries, books, toys, art supplies, and more. A full list of what all will be accepted can be found here. SERVE Family Shelter: 10058 Dean Dr., Manassas

Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia

Donating to one of the retail thrift shops for this organization directly helps their mission of empowering and uplifting homeless women, children, and families and providing them with shelter, support, and resources. Good Shepherd of Northern Virginia has retail thrift locations in Ashburn, Chantilly, Leesburg, and Sterling. You can donate clothing, books, household items, and more. Multiple area locations

Women Giving Back

This Sterling-based non-profit supports women and children in crisis by providing clothing, shoes, accessories, and other essentials free of cost. Its vision is to ensure that women and children have what they need as a first step toward stability. Whether an outfit for an upcoming job interview, clothes to help fit in with peers, or simply just a fresh start, Women Giving Back is there to help. Upcoming donation days and a list of accepted items is available here. 20 Export Dr., Sterling

Doors of Hope USA

This thrift store, located in Ashburn, collects an assortment of donated items to help those in need including furniture, household items, bicycles, linens, jewelry, and seasonal clothing for men, women, and children of all ages. Doors of Hope accepts donations Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Find more information on donating here. 21770 Beaumeade Cir., Ste. 155, Ashburn

The Closet

The Closet of the Greater Herndon Area, located in the heart of historic downtown Herndon, is a nonprofit thrift store that provides high-quality, used clothing, household items, and more for affordable prices. A portion of the proceeds go to local nonprofits that support low-income families in Fairfax and Loudoun counties. See more information on how to donate clothing here. 845 Station St., Herndon

The Treasure Hound

If your heart is in helping animals, consider donating to this Chantilly resale shop which operates solely to support Friends of Homeless Animals, a nonprofit, no-kill shelter in Aldie. The Treasure Hound accepts donations including antiques, art, clothing, jewelry, pet supplies (with new tags only), and all proceeds fund food, shelter, vaccinations, and medical treatment for the adoptable animals at the shelter. The Treasure Hound accepts donations 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. 14508-D Lee Rd., Chantilly
