The end of summer means it’s time to tackle back-to-school shopping (and some shopping just for fun.) The Alexandria Summer Sidewalk Sale will return on Saturday, August 12, with over 40 boutiques setting up outside to offer discounted merchandise. Shoppers will find tables with clothing, shoes, books, and art at lower-than-usual prices.
This annual event, now in its 14th year, is organized by Visit Alexandria in partnership with the City of Alexandria and the Old Town Business Association. It runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition to the shopping opportunities, visitors can enjoy live music throughout the duration o the event. Bluegrass and country band No Part of Nothin’ will play from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the corner of Fayette and King streets, and the Vaugh Ambrose Jazz Trio will play from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Union and King streets.
A map of participating stores is available online, will be accessible through QR codes at participating stores, and can be picked up at the Alexandria Visitor Center.
This year’s event will feature some first-time sidewalk sale participants, including French boutique American in Paris, Fiscus Glassworks, and feminine health and wellness boutique Ms. Moxie’s Moon Shop.
On the first block of King Street closest to the waterfront, there will have pop-up booths from some vendors, including Lily’s Flower Truck, Made in ALX, and Passionately Pets.
Most participating stores are concentrated in the King Street area of Old Town, but some are located in Del Ray, including the Del Ray Vintage & Flea Market.
Some other participating stores include:
- Penny Post and Red Barn Mercantile will mark down sale items an additional 10 percent;
- Old Town Books will have a cart of imperfect books for $5;
- The Hive and The Shoe Hive will have tables of merchandise discounted 60 to 80 percent;
