Mosaic District Farmers Market is Growing

The weekly farmers market will now extend onto Strawberry Lane, making it one of the largest in Northern Virginia.

Shoppers at the FreshFarm Mosaic Market will soon have more options for their Sunday fix of produce and artisan goods. FreshFarm announced that the market will expand starting Sunday, August 6, the first day of National Farmers Market Week.

The market will now extend from District Avenue onto Strawberry Lane, with an additional 15 vendors to fill the extra space. This brings the total count of vendors to nearly 60, putting the market “in the running to be the largest farmers market in Northern Virginia,” according to FreshFarm.

The FreshFarm Mosaic Market runs every Sunday year-round, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. It includes fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, eggs and meats, coffee, and prepared foods. Some popular vendors include The Fermented Pig, DMV Empanadas, and Toimoi Bakery.

“The expansion into Strawberry Lane means we can connect even more farmers and producers with the community while also providing local residents with a wider variety of fresh and healthy options,” said Rebecca Chávez, the director of agricultural programs at FreshFarm.

“We hope that a bigger market will also grow participation in FreshMatch, which both helps shoppers take home more nutritious produce and local foods while creating and sustaining new revenue streams for local growers.”

FreshMatch is an incentive program that provides a dollar-for-dollar match of all federal benefits such as SNAP, making it easier for lower-income customers to shop for produce. The program received a $1.4 million grant from the USDA in 2021 to expand food access throughout the DMV.

FreshFarm operates a total of 24 farmers markets throughout the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area, including five in Northern Virginia. It took over the operations of the farmers market in the Mosaic District in 2019.
