Our moms always told us not to mix prints, but as we know in fashion rules are always broken. Mixing prints is one of the more difficult trends to pull off. You don’t want to be caught looking like you blindly reached into your closet and went on your merry way. Stick to a rule to follow, like a color scheme, or if one item is graphic keep the other subdued. Here are four different looks to help lead you into the mismatched unknown:

Graphic prints are best with subtle or dramatic geometric accents. Blending bold stripes or white hot shoes allows for a cohesive and stylish look.

By following the same color palette, blending patterns isn’t as scary. Stick with black and white with an accent color to start and blend thick and thin designs so that the look isn’t overpowering.

Jaeger Zig Zag Pencil Skirt, Black /Ivory, $255; johnlewis.com

Polka dots are a great base when it comes to mixing prints. It compliments a loud design like bright florals for a fun mix of mediums. Throw on some hot red lipstick and you’re ready to go.
