Honor the life and legacy of Dr. King at Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration January 15–17, 2022

Reston Community Center will honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at its 37th Annual Reston Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Celebration January 15 – 17. The events ask the question “Are we keeping the promise?” and provide meaningful reflection, discussion, and performances.

“The times cry to us for action and engagement,” said Beverly Cosham, Chair of RCC’s Board of Governors. “We will gather to ignite our commitments to take action, to remember the human rights for which Dr. King laid down his life, and to replenish our spirits in the company of people from throughout our community who share the passion for justice that fuels the movement toward a truly free society.”

Schedule of Events:
Saturday January 15

Reston Community Orchestra Annual Musical Tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: Words and Music as Diverse as the World of which He Dreamed
4 p.m. • RCC Hunters Woods – Community Room
All Ages • Free
Combining the traditions of African American culture and Western classical music, the concert pays tribute to Dr. King’s vision of a society free of prejudice and racial divisions, and his belief in the power of music to help create positive change. Free tickets will be available through the CenterStage Box Office two weeks prior to the performance.

Sunday, January 16

Baratunde Thurston (writer, comedian, activist)
2 p.m. • RCC Hunters Woods – the CenterStage
$15 Reston/$20 Non-Reston
Baratunde Thurston holds space for hard and complex conversations with his blend of humor, wisdom and compassion. He is an Emmy-nominated TV host who has worked for The Onion, produced for The Daily Show, advised the Obama White House, and written The New York Times bestsellerHow To Be Black. Baratunde is unique in his ability to integrate and synthesize themes of race, culture, politics, and technology to explain where our nation is and where we can take it. It is recommended that children under 16 be accompanied by an adult.

Keynote Address and Community Lunch: Heather McGhee

10:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. • RCC Hunters Woods
6–12 Years Old • Free • Registration Required: 704750-2A
You may register your school-age child (first to sixth grade) to participate in age-appropriate activities at RCC. Activities are based on the history of Dr. King and the Civil Rights Movement. Lunch will be provided.
