Sportrock Climbing Center to Open at Fair Oaks Mall

The rock climbing gym will span two floors of the downsized JCPenney.

By Emily Perez September 2, 2026 at 11:32 am

A local climbing gym is opening at Fair Oaks Mall. Sportrock Climbing Centers has leased 43,000 square feet of the JCPenney building, according to Washington Business Journal.

The new rock-climbing and adventure gym will span two floors with indoor areas for beginners and experienced climbers. It also offers climbing instruction, youth programs, camps, and birthday parties.

The Fair Oaks location will be Sportrock’s sixth gym. The NoVA-based company has two Alexandria locations, plus gyms in Gaithersburg and Sterling. A Lorton location also opened in July.

JCPenney Closures

Sportrock’s new space comes as JCPenney continues to downsize its footprint. The department store still operates at Fair Oaks Mall and rents about 146,000 square feet of the building, with an option to terminate its lease in 2029. Earlier this year, JCPenney closed its Springfield Town Center location after more than 50 years.

Sportrock is expected to open at Fair Oaks in 18 months. The climbing gym will join other experiential businesses at Fair Oaks Mall, including Sky Zone, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Golf Galaxy.
