FCPS Says Investigations into Staff-Facilitated Abortions Have Concluded

Two separate investigations have found no evidence of wrongdoing by Fairfax County employees.

Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid has offered an update on the allegations that Centreville High School staff helped facilitate abortions for two students in 2021. Two investigations into the case are now closed, she said. Both investigations found no “evidence of wrongdoing or any need for further action.”

Case Background

An August 2025 published report alleged that Centreville High School staff helped two minors obtain abortions without parental consent. Former Gov. Glenn Youngkin directed the Virginia State Police to investigate the claims. The U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pension (HELP) opened an investigation as well.

At the same time, the Department of Education (DOE) ordered FCPS to investigate the matter and share its findings with the DOE.

FCPS launched an internal investigation that concluded in January 2026. Reid sent a letter saying the investigation had found that the allegations “not only were untrue but were based largely on statements that were misinterpreted, mistranslated, taken out of context, or in some cases knowingly fabricated.” Those findings were shared with VSP, the DOE, and HELP.

In a June 16 update, Reid said the VSP and HELP investigations were now closed.

FCPS teacher Zenaida Perez, who made the allegations, filed a federal lawsuit against FCPS in February. A federal judge dismissed Perez’s lawsuit in March.
