Gov. Glenn Youngkin has directed the Virginia State Police to open a criminal investigation into allegations of school-funded abortions in Fairfax County. According to a press release, Youngkin’s order was prompted by a published report detailing allegations of Centreville High School staff members helping minors to get abortions without parental consent.
“I am deeply concerned with the allegations that Fairfax County Public Schools officials arranged for minors to get abortions without parental consent and may have misused public funds to pay for them. I am directing the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation to open a full criminal investigation into the matter immediately,” said Youngkin.
According to the website W.C. Dispatch, “Two female students — both minors — say school officials arranged and bankrolled abortions at Fairfax Healthcare Center without so much as a phone call to their parents, a direct break with Virginia’s parental-notification law.”
The story includes images of written statements from the two students. They allege a Centreville High School social worker scheduled the procedures in 2021.
Under Virginia law, a physician must certify in writing that at least one parent has been notified before performing an abortion on a minor unless a judicial bypass has been obtained.
On August 7, a Fairfax County Public Schools representative issued a statement to the news outlet The Center Square. “We have serious questions about these allegations that must be answered,” the statement said. “At no time would the situation as described in these allegations from back in 2021 be acceptable in Fairfax County Public Schools. We have taken immediate action engaging an external investigator to get the facts. We all deserve to know exactly what happened. We will take appropriate action as necessary.”
