The plan to build a massive Buc-ee’s gas station and convenience store in Stafford County has taken a step forward. The Stafford County Planning Commission narrowly approved the plan in a meeting Wednesday. It now goes before the Board of Supervisors for consideration.
The commission voted 4–3 in favor of the plan, despite the recommendation from its planning staff to deny the plan because of traffic concerns.
The proposed new Stafford Buc-ee’s would encompass around 38 acres of space on a currently vacant lot. It would include 833 parking spaces and 120 fuel pumps. The store itself would span 74,000 square feet.
On Wednesday, the Planning Commission heard from members of the community. More than 40 people spoke, and many expressed concerns over the traffic impact the Buc-ee’s would have on the area.
The full Board of Supervisors now has the final say on whether the plan can move forward. They are expected to hold a vote later this year, though no official date has been announced.
The first Buc-ee’s in Virginia opened in Rockingham County last June to crowds of excited visitors. A New Kent location is expected to open in 2029.
The chain has a cult-like following for its massive stores, iconic beaver mascot, and ready-made foods like “beaver nuggets,” as well as Buc-ee’s branded retail items.
