A Loudoun County Public Schools maintenance worker has been charged in a January 13 crash that killed a Stone Bridge High School student. Dale Whitney Taylor, 58, of Leesburg, was charged with failure to yield to a pedestrian, a misdemeanor. He was released on a summons.

Taylor was driving a LCPS maintenance vehicle in the fatal collision at the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard in Ashburn. Stone Bridge student Calina Yu, 20, of Ashburn, was pronounced dead at the scene. Yu was a special needs student at the school, LoudounNow reported.

Taylor remained on scene to speak with detectives.

At the time of the crash, residents expressed concern about drivers speeding in the area. “It’s horrible. This isn’t about me. I feel for that family. I can’t even imagine what they are going through. But I wanted to make a statement to escalate the importance of doing something, because this is a 45-mile-an-hour road that, let’s be honest, people drive close to 60 down,” one area resident told NBC4.

There are crosswalks throughout the intersection where the incident took place. But residents told News4 it’s not uncommon for students to cross outside of them.
