The National Park Service has unveiled a new memorial honoring those who served in Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. It is located on the National Mall.
The memorial’s stated goals, according to its website, are to educate visitors about the operations and the history behind them. That includes the 34-nation coalition that united to liberate Kuwait and the conditions service members faced during the operations. Individual names are not included.
The two operations were the United States’ first major foreign crises post-Cold War. The ensuing war lasted 43 days and claimed many lives.
“More than 35 years after these operations, the memorial provides a permanent place to remember their service and sacrifice,” NPS wrote on social media.
