Police arrested a Manassas Park High School art teacher on Monday after a loaded handgun was discovered in a school parking lot. The discovery prompted closures at all Manassas Park City Schools on Monday.
Manassas Park Police says a transportation employee found the gun during morning safety checks. It was on the pavement between two district vans parked at Manassas Park Middle School.
The teacher, Veronica Gooch-Ray of Potomac Falls, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property. She has been placed on administrative leave, InsideNoVA reports.
Following an investigation, officials determined that there was no threat to the schools or the community.
“The Manassas Park Police Department commends the transportation employee for their vigilance and prompt reporting,” the department said in a release. “We remain committed to the safety of our students, school staff, and the entire community, and we appreciate the continued cooperation of Manassas Park City Schools and our residents.”
District schools reopened on Tuesday.
