A student at Loudoun County’s Stone Bridge High School was struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning while crossing the road near the school. Police identified the victim as Calina Yu, 20, of Ashburn. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident happened around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Claiborne Parkway and Portsmouth Boulevard in Ashburn. The driver of the vehicle that struck Yu is an employee of Loudoun County Public Schools and was operating an LCPS maintenance vehicle. The driver remained on scene to speak with detectives.

“We’ve just experienced so many accidents, and we’ve always been scared that it would be a pedestrian, and this morning it was,” one area resident told NBC4. “It’s horrible. This isn’t about me. I feel for that family. I can’t even imagine what they are going through. But I wanted to make a statement to escalate the importance of doing something because this is a 45 mile an hour road that, let’s be honest, people drive close to 60 down.”

There are crosswalks throughout the intersection where the incident took place. But residents told News4 it’s not uncommon for students to cross outside of them.

The case remains an active investigation. The LCSO is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has any relevant information to contact Detective Mark Lotz at 703-771-1021. Callers wishing to remain anonymous can call Loudoun County Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919 or submit a tip through the LCSO app.
