Alexandria Permanently Closes a Second Block of King Street to Traffic

The 200-block of King Street will now be pedestrian-only.

By Amy Ayres September 16, 2025 at 11:25 am

Good news for visitors to Old Town Alexandria: The permanent pedestrian zone by the popular waterfront area is officially expanding. In a vote on Saturday, the city council approved the 200-block of King Street, which is lined with shops and restaurants, as pedestrian-only.

The 100-block of King Street has been blocked off to traffic since 2022, according to Visit Alexandria.

The measure is effective immediately after a unanimous 7-0 vote, reports ALXNow. It means the elimination of 16 metered parking spaces on the newly added block.

The move comes at the end of the second phase of a pilot program that began in November 2024. The majority of the businesses on the block supported the change.

Earlier this year, Alexandria was ranked the No. 5 Best City in the U.S. by Travel + Leisure.
