The massive Powerball jackpot continues to grow ahead of the next drawing on Saturday, September 6. The estimated $1.7 billion jackpot has an estimated cash value of $770.3 million.
Saturday’s jackpot ranks as the third largest in U.S. lottery history. The world record $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot was won in 2022 in California.
Ahead of Monday’s drawing, a Powerball ticket worth $1 million was sold at the Wawa located at 704 Sudley Rd. in Manassas. That ticket matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball number. Two other tickets purchased using the Virginia Lottery mobile app matched four of the first five winning numbers plus the Powerball number. Those tickets won $150,000 each.
In last night’s drawing, 11 tickets matched all five numbers (but not the Powerball number) to win $1 million prizes. The $1 million winning tickets were sold in California (2), Colorado, Florida, Georgia (2), Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.
All Virginia Lottery profits, including those from the sale of Powerball tickets, go to fund K through 12 education in Virginia. So far this fiscal year, the lottery has raised more than $901 million. This equates to approximately 10 percent of the state’s total K though 12 school budget, Virginia Lottery says.
Powerball tickets can be purchased at more than 5,300 Virginia Lottery retailers statewide or online using the Virginia Lottery app. Drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays.
